Best Time to do Shark Cage Diving in South Africa, Gansbaai

Shark cage diving in Gansbaai is at its best during February, March, and April, making these months ideal for anyone planning shark cage diving in South Africa. The weather is typically warm and sunny, with flat, calm seas in the mornings—perfect conditions for safe and enjoyable shark diving experiences.

Today’s trip delivered incredible sightings, with no fewer than 15 Bronze Whaler sharks, also known as Copper sharks, surrounding the boat. These social sharks are known for feeding together and frequently came right up to the cage, giving guests outstanding views. Their curious behaviour kept them close to the boat and cage until it was time to lift anchor and return to shore.

Encounters like this are what make Gansbaai shark cage diving tours so special. Bronze Whalers are entertaining, confident swimmers and often stay with the vessel for extended periods, creating unforgettable moments for underwater photographers and marine wildlife enthusiasts.

While summer offers excellent weather, winter shark cage diving in Gansbaai also has unique advantages. Aside from occasional storms, winter brings water temperatures of around 18°C and often crystal-clear visibility. We’re hopeful that this winter will also mark the return of the Great White sharks, which would elevate the experience even further.
